Adventures in Deer Proofing

Oct 15, 2024TerraTree Updates

Hello from the Dietz family!

So far, 2024 has been a wild ride for the TerraTrees team! In addition to coordinating our largest and most complex tree planting project to date, David is once again pioneering new forest management ideas in Minnesota. What’s that you ask?

>>> 8-foot deer fencing <<<

That’s exactly what it sounds like – super tall fencing to keep the deer from eating the baby tree buds!

Last fall, David comes walking into the office with a twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face and blurts, “I just bought 2 miles of 8-foot deer fence and related supplies from a North Carolina supplier.”

Excuse me, what?

Two. Miles.

That's like 40 city blocks. 👀

Let me tell you, friends, we have a very compatible marriage, but one thing we differ on the most is our risk tolerance. Haha. Luckily, after 27 years, I’ve learned to trust David’s gut instincts which are eerily spot-on most of the time. So, I took a deep breath and asked him where he planned to store those 2 freaking miles of deer fencing (I am the operations manager, after all).

Well, he had a plan, and I’m happy to report that it’s been well implemented!

Fast forward to today, and the fencing has now been used on 8 biodiversity planting sites, including around 60k square feet of protection at THE HAVEN alone. Species now safe from those pesky deer include white pine, red oak, red maple, birch, chokecherry, jack pine, and wild plum. These are all native species to these soils. Our goal is to protect the young saplings in order to create a more ecologically healthy and diverse forest.

Great work David and team! They did a great job, and now we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the baby trees will be safe this winter. 🌱
